Handling
asbestos based friction material
The
following notes are for the general guidance of those who
are concerned with the occasional handling of asbestos based
friction materials, as regards the precautions which, by law,
are required to be taken and the steps taken by the company
to minimise the amount of dust (not all asbestos) liberated
when products are handled. When more detailed information
is required please contact the Safety Officer at Head Office.
Woven
material and clutch facings have been for sometime treated
with a PVA sealant as the last operation before leaving the
factory; in the near future all linings will have this treatment
and there is also a possibility that disc brake pads will
also be sealed.
The
normal handling of these products, particularly after sealing,
should not cause any problems, but if any machining operations
such as drilling, cutting and grinding are carried out then
it is essential that exhaust ventilation is provided to prevent
the dust from entering the atmosphere and ensure that the
airborne asbestos level is not more than the statutory level.
The control limit is 0.5 fibres / ml when sampled over any
continuous period of 4 hrs or 1.5 fibres / mml of air when
sampled over any continuous 10 minute period
If
the dust extraction unit is portable it must be of the approved
type and it should be borne in mind that the person responsible
for emptying or servicing the cleaner must wear an approved
respirator.
Although
the wear products of asbestos based friction materials contain
very little asbestos (generally less than 1%) it is recommended
that an approved vacuum cleaner (ref 2) is used for cleaning
out brake drums and clutch housings, etc. If a cleaner is
not available, wiping with a damp cloth is considered acceptable
or water mixed with a little domestic detergent may be used,
but under no circumstances should a compressed air line be
used.
Disposal
of dust in labelled and sealed bags should be by arrangement
with the Local Authority who will outline the necessary forms
which need to be completed before disposal.
Linings
are termed as 'hard waste' and can be disposed of by the usual
method employed by the Local Authority.
